Nature-Based Learning

Nature-Based Learning at Langdale Elementary | K to Grade 3

Nature-based learning is rooted in philosophy and pedagogy and is supported by research that underscores its emotional, social and academic merits. By putting forward an expression of interest for Langdale Elementary’s primary classes (grades K-3), you will be showing an interest in the curriculum being delivered to your child through nature as the learning lens, often in an outdoor setting. Learning takes place in the community and outside in nature classrooms – at the beach, in the forest, and in nearby parks. This means that children will be outside in all sorts of weather and that the community will be their classroom.

Langdale Elementary families all have a place in the primary (K-Grade 3) Nature-Based Learning classes at Langdale Elementary and are NOT required to fill out the Expression of Interest form.  A lottery draw for spaces for those out of catchment will happen in late March dependent on the space available. (This is unlike Davis Bay Elementary NEST where all students, regardless of their catchment area, have to enter a lottery.)

Registration/Application Process

1. REGISTER WITH YOUR HOME SCHOOL
First you will need to register your catchment school. You can determine this by entering your address into our school locator.

2.EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM (see below online and downloadable form)
You will be required to fill out an Expression of Interest form for your child if you are out of Langdale Elementary’s catchment.
Also note, that we do not carry applications forward to the next year, you will be required to re-apply for your child each year, should they not obtain a spot.

3. CROSS BOUNDARY APPLICATION
If you do not live in our catchment, after you complete the above, you will also need to complete a Cross Boundary Application to Langdale Elementary.

LOTTERY
A lottery draw for spaces for those out of catchment will happen in late March.

You will be notified by phone or email to let you know if your child was successful in obtaining a spot in the program.
